It is most the important if you who are planning to get a bearded dragon to set up his tank BEFORE you bring him home. This article contains 5 tips for make your dragon a safe and comfortable home.

#1 The right tank size

Your beardie will need a lot of space, remember dragons come originally from Australia. The minimum space for an adult beardie is 36”x”’ x”’. Even better would be 42” x 24” x 20”.

Also when buying a tank for your beardie you should make sure its easy to maintain, keep clean and you should be able to reach your dragon easily when you want to play with him.

Think carefully about where you are going to locate the tank. Beardies like to see things happening around them but too much activity can cause them stress. And make sure you put the tank is in a spot that is not too hot- in direct sunlight, or not too cold- beside an air con unit.

#2 Essential tank items

All items should be easy to clean and maintain. Also make sure they are secure, can’t come loose or tip over and injure the little critter.

Essentials for tank are: food dish, something for your dragon to climb and perch on and a ‘hide away box’ (Beardies, like to hide away when they feel stressed!)

#3 Bedding

Your dragon will also need bedding and here again you should try and make its habitat as natural as possible. Sand or a reptile carpet is good. But if your on a tight budget non-adhesive shelf liner or plain old newspaper will do just as well.

#4 Tank heating

Beardies native home is Australia where he depends on the sun to heat his body. Hence a ‘basking lamp’ is essential. Also if the temperature in your home drops below 65F at night you will want additional heating this could be a heater under the tank.

But remember you should not have the same temperature throughout the tank as your dragon requires (90-95F), cool(75-85F) and basking (100F) heat. Therefor thermometers in the tank are essential.

#7 Lighting the tank

Your bearded dragon is active during daytime and requires both Ultra Violet-A and Ultra Violet-B rays to keep healthy. Ultra Violet-A rays are provided with the ‘basking lights’. and in the wild your beardie would get his Ultra Violet-B rays from the sun. So expose him to natural sunlight from time to time. One hour in the sun is as good as eighteen hours under lights!

And last thing, remember to check all lights regularly and replace bulbs every 6 months (they lose their UV concentration after that time) even if the still appear to be working .

Follow the tips above and you will have a habitat fit for a happy healthy dragon.
