Catch fruit flies (Drosophila) with vinegar
Written by scottology on November 6, 2009 – 6:07 pm -
How to catch some 50 fruit flies in 100 minutes. Recipe: Equal amounts of water and any WHITE vinegar (red will not work – I don’t know why, maybe it’s the colour). Add to this just a few drops of detergent to reduce surface tension.

I made my own fly trap with a large glass and a paper funnel. I used cherry tomatos and lots of honey. I cought hundreds of them in just 2 days they were all gone.

YES it DOES work! Did you read the description for the recipe that works? Did you use WHITE vinegar instead of RED vinegar? Check that you are adding the right amounts, as I have used this plenty of times as I HATE fruit flies with an unnatural passion….

Thanks for the recipe. I made a trap like this but also placed a paper cone, with a hole cut off the tip, facing down. Then taped it to the cup around the outside. It works! They get in, and most aren’t smart enough to get back out – but some are.
I felt a little bad watching two of them on the top side of the cone. Two were following and “kissing” each other then scurrying away. One (I assumed the female) then deserted the male, and went inside and almost instantly drowned. LMAO. Poor male.

Hmm…never had much luck with white vinegar. But I’m currently performing fruit flies genocide with apple cider vinegar and the glass/paper cone trap. I’ve seen 5 fly in since I started the video!

I want to spend as little money and effort on those bastards as possible. If you do it with cheap white vinegar, I suppose you don’t have to dilute it. I usually use my homemade cidervinegar, which I make from my home made apple cider. Lots of work behind! Therfore – dilution

As honeylocs said: any dish detergent will do it. Actually anything that lowers the surface tension. Liquid soap should work fine as well.

why add water (and dilute the vinegar)?

omg thank you for this 8D I’m trying this right now. God I wouldn’t have to deal with a swarm of flies in my kitchen if my dad hadn’t left ice cream sitting in the garbage can for a week. And he’s supposed to be in charge of taking the trash out too. =_=

I’ve made it using a few drops of Dawn dish detergent, but any dish detergent should work fine.

I’ve been able to catch fruit flies without killing them by putting vinegar in a cup, putting plastic wrap over the cup, held in place by a rubber band, and punching small holes in the cup with a wooden skewer. For some reason, they can get in, but generally can’t figure out how to get out.

Kelly,
Yes, you have to have them in your house, preferrably in your kitchen. But that’s an easy thing to achieve. Just buy some bananas or sweet plums and forget them for a while. In a week or so, you will have a whole bunch of fruit flies. But for your praying mantises, I canĀ“t recommend you to catch these creatures with the method above. I believe the detergent isn’t very healty for your mantises. And don’t they prefer living prey?
