Parental care in Beddomes Caecilian
Written by scottology on March 3, 2010 – 12:32 pm -Caecilians are limbless amphibians. They exhibit parental care. The female coils around the egg clutch and periodically rotate it, till the eggs hatch. The mother caecilian does not take any food during the parental care period. The Beddomes Caecilian, Ichthyophis beddomei, is known to have 25 to 38 eggs in an egg clutch. Egg size ranges from 6 mm at the time of laying to 12 mm at the time of hatching. Eggs generally hatch in 60 to 90 days. A newly hatched one possesses 3 pairs of external pinnate gills [Videographed at Kalpetta, Wynad district, Kerala, by the scientists of WGRC/ZSI, Kozhikode].

Aquatic Caecilian Birth
Written by scottology on January 22, 2010 – 9:43 pm -Check out this uncommon video of an aquatic caecilian, Typhlonectes natans, giving birth at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, Tennessee. On this particular day, the mother had already given birth to two siblings to the newborn shown. You’ll see the large, external gills of these amazing creatures. These animals are sometimes referred to as “rubber eels,” however they are amphibians. Watch for a surprise ending to this video.

Written by scottology on December 16, 2009 – 2:33 am -As posted on Newscientist.com: Some caecilian species shed a special nutrient-rich skin shortly after giving birth to feed their young. This may be the closest any amphibian comes to producing “milk” for its young.
