If you spend a lot of time out of doors, you should be aware that annoying mosquitoes can carry an array of viral diseases that could threaten your life.

Most people have already heard about the correlation between mosquitoes and West Nile virus. Nearly all mosquitoes are capable of carrying the filariasis worm, the cause of the disease elephantiasis. Approximately 40 million people worldwide are currently suffering from some form of this disease.

Although these facts seem terrible, they are not the most dreaded part of the mosquito problem. As we age, mosquito bites are often undetected. In children, mosquito bites often cause their skin to swell up & turn red. In adults, however, they tend to build resistance to these bites.

You may wonder what the signs & symptoms of a bed bug infestation are There are two common signs, and they are the following:

1. Rash From Bed Bugs

Itching is the first sign of a bed bug rash. You won’t be able to see the rash at first but it will definitely feel itchy. They are itchier than mosquito bites, and the itch can usually be sensed 1 hour after the bite. In some cases, the bed bug rash appears only after a few days or weeks.

You can identify a bed bug rash when it has a small, round and red bump that looks more swollen than a mosquito rash. In some cases, the rash looks a lot like a bite mark in sequence. If you think you may have bed bug rash, a few days of examining it wouldn’t hurt. The rash causes prolonged itching for days together. Also, a bed bug rash doesn’t heal as quickly as mosquito bites. They remain swollen for weeks at a time.

2. Bed Bug Odor

Next thing to look for is bed bug smell. What smell do they give off?

Bed bugs release a musty, obnoxious odor, so a room where there’s plenty of bed bug infestation smells of it. You may find this odor under the headboard and mattresses. If your sofas have cracks, check if they’ve got bed bug odor. They are also sometimes infested with bed bugs.

The Many Kinds Of Rats

Rats are rodents that belong to the Rattus genus of the family Muridae. These are the most dominant species on earth. Plenty of rat species exist in the planet. Most rodents eat plants, but some feed upon animals as well. In general, there are 2 basic rat types. They are black or roof rats and Norway or brown rats. Both are believed to have originated in Asia and are now widely spread throughout the planet.

Ship Rats

Roof rats (known as Rattus Rattus) are also called black rats and ship rats. These rats are normally black in color, slender, 16-21 cm long & weigh about 80-300 grams. Their tail is longer than the head and body and their nose and muzzle are pointed. As the name suggest, roof rats are climbers. Their paws are built to climb and build nestles in higher parts of dwellings, attics, rafters and crossbeams of buildings.

Norway Rat

The brown rat, which is also known as the Norway rat, house rat, gray rat, barn rat, and wharf rat, is the larger of the two mentioned here, and one of the best-known species. Their scientific name is Rattus norvegicus. They are mostly grayish-brown, with a lighter colored stomach. A fully-grown brown rat is 18 to 26 cm long & weighs between 400 and 600 grams. Their tail is shorter than its body and their nose and muzzle are blunt. They prefer moist conditions and nest in deep burrows.

These rats breed when they are three to four months of age. They breed up to 13 times a year & produce 1 to 22 in each litter. Black rats & brown rats eat about the same things. Their diet usually consists of meats, seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, fruits, cereals & invertebrates. They consume about one-third of their weight in food every 24 hours.

They carry fatal diseases, damage structures and contaminate food. Some of the diseases potentially deadly to man that spread through rats are Weil’s disease, plague, salmonella food poisoning & toxoplasmosis.

Pest Control Techniques That Don’t Endanger The Environment

A witty rat is one that is not easily caught, and one that can grow a colony while you are sleeping. A rat is a household pest that can be extremely destructive. It can nibble clothes, wirings on your home theatre, or on that pricey Persian rug. Pest control professionals use time-tested ways to get rid of the most cunning of rats. In recent years, earth-friendly means of rat control have been introduced.

One of these means is creating compost. This is basically dug out in an area where you want to lead and do away with the pesky rodent. You can put piles into your compost utilising discarded food and other biodegradable garbage that rats usually take. Make sure to keep the compost far enough for the rat to find its way back to the house.

The problem with the compost is that rats can still get out of it, leading you to use other methods which are less effective and most of the time unsanitary. These include putting traps, or having cats chase the rats. What do you with your compost then?
