Out of nowhere my cat acted as if she was wild. She was trying to bite my wife and I growling and showing her teeth. She has never acted that way before. She was a very loving and playful and liked attention. She has been an indoor cat from 6 weeks old. She hated flies and bugs and ate all she could catch. On Monday, there was a silk worm crawling across the kitchen floor and she killed it and ate it. Around 2 hours later, she went berserk. I have herd that sometimes an animal can have a stroke and it can affect a part of the brain that can make them act weird. Does anyone have any ideas

Drosophila is the scientific name for something you might know better as a fruit fly. This tiny pest only measures about 1/8 of an inch but it might as well be 3 feet tall when it comes to getting rid of him. Fruit flies are also called the red eyed fly, pomace flies and vinegar fly. This pest is found throughout the world and can make it’s home inside or out. This versatility makes it hard to get rid of in sensitive places like hospitals, restaurants or wineries. Building often offer many places for this fly to thrive and especially larger ones such as mentioned above.

Fruit flies develop by complete metamorphosis. The female fruit fly will lay about 500 eggs, which are difficult to see with the naked eye and she deposits themnear the surface of moist decaying organic matter. A pair of filaments that are attached to the eggs protrude above themain dining area that the fruit fly has found. The larvae will emerge about 30 hours after the eggs have been laid and feed. The larvae feed for five to six days and then crawl to drier areas near the food source to pupate. When the adult fruit fly emerges it is attracted to lights and can become sexually active 2 days later.Under ideal conditions, the life cycle from egg to adult can be completed in as little as eight days. The sudden appearance of large populations is not uncommon inside buildings.

Fruit flies have a complete life cycle meaning the go from egg to larva then pupate into adults. Females can lay up to 500 eggs which are barely visible. She deposits her eggs on or near moist organic material which is where the young will feed.Eggs hatch in only 30 hours and the larvae feed for about 6 days before they move to a drier location to pupate. When conditions are good the whole process from egg to adult can happen in as little as 8 days and the adults are sexually active within 48 hours. This quick life cycle often leads to what seems like overnight population explosions of the fruit fly.

To get rid of the fruit fly you have to get rid of the breeding site. The key is fruit flies only lay their eggs in moist rotting or decaying debris or matter. This could be an old banana behind the refrigerator, a fermenting potato at the bottom of the bag, spilled juice, scum build up in the drains or just about anything that fits this description. While putting bleach in the drain can help it’s far more effective to physically clean the scum out of the drain. Removing any rotting fruits or cleaning up spills may just be eliminating your source too so leave no stone unturned as you search for possible places the female will lay her eggs. It takes very little organic matter to sustain a whole host of flies so be persistent.

Once your done with sanitation you could spray a pyrethrum aerosol to help alleviate the remaining adults. One common trick used is the funnel in a jar. By constructing a funnel out of paper or other material simply pour wine, cider, vinegar or other attractant into a jar and place the funnel with small side down in the the container. The material will lure them down the funnel but there they will be trapped as they search the glass for a way out but the small opening will be rarely found. This effective but simple trap will catch the adults and they will eventually drown or die in the glass.
