What is the best substrate for bearded dragons?

Written by scottology on July 30, 2010 – 4:26 am -

I currently own 2 juvenile bearded dragons (both about 1 foot long) and up until now I have been using large wood chippings as a substrate, I have been wanting to switch to sand but have heard that this causes impaction. Is this true? And if so what is the best substrate to use in place of it?

How long do leopard geckos need to adjust to new habitat?

Written by scottology on July 29, 2010 – 10:30 pm -

Ok, I just got a new baby leopard gecko yesterday. I have also a 1 year old leopard gecko. I put both of them in a 40 gallon tank with a divider so they do not interact. I know they are stressed out with the new environment and they won’t eat. How long will the geckos need to adjust to their new habitats? And when wanting to feed the geckos, should I just not even disturb them? For how long?

Setting Up The Bearded Dragon Vivarium Habitat

Written by Nathan Webster on July 26, 2010 – 5:03 pm -

For a bearded dragon, which is a type of reptile, to survive as a pet with a family of people, there will be a need to keep it in the bearded dragon vivarium. This is designed to help you work out what is needed to go in the vivarium.

A bearded dragon will grow quite large, up to sixty centimetres, so the vivarium, which is like a miniature ecological system, will need to be a good size, say almost two metres long by around half a metre high, by about half a metre wide.

As these reptiles have a poor tolerance of noise and too much light, they can become stressed so they will need to be put in a quiet spot. Any artificial daylight needs to be kept to what a normal daily pattern in real life would be. A bearded dragon is cold blooded and the need to have their conditions as close as possible to the real habitat is a necessity. These reptiles usually warm themselves on rocks and there needs to be heating of some sort, and a heat lamp is probably the most suitable.

These creatures need to be in a habitat which is as close to their natural living as possible. They are cold blooded so they will need some kind of large rocks on which they can warm themselves, and in saying this there will also be a need to provide heating of some sort, such as heat lamps.

The bearded dragon is an Australian reptile which thrives in the outback, or a semi desert type plains country. So if the vivarium is styled on this type of surrounding then there is a better chance of it thriving as it does in the wild. It is a good idea to try to copy the effects of day and night in a semi desert atmosphere, where there are rock type formations but some vegetation.

Wherever they may be purchased from see if the seller will allow you to contact him or her in the event a problem arises which you cannot correct yourself.
