I tried this. The fruit flies would just sit on the edge of the bowl but never go in. BUT, I tried this: clean jar, banana piece, saran wrap, punch 4 to 5 holes, rubber band, and WOW, I got like 20 in each of the 2 traps in 24 hours. Amazed at how well it worked, just make sure you kill them before they lay eggs because, unlike the parents, the babies can figure out how to get back out of the holes.

One good way to killing fruit flies when they’re swarming is to get a spray bottle full of water with a drop of soap. Set your nozzle to fog, and spray on the swarm. The flies will drop and they’re easy to kill!

I used apple cider vinegar and soap and it works great! You don’t need to use a lot–I have about half a cup of fluid in a little juice glass. There is a thick layer of dead fruit flies on the bottom. Gross, but I’m glad it works.
