If you think you may have bed bug rash, a few days of examining it wouldn’t hurt. The rash causes prolonged itching for days together. Also, a bed bug rash doesn’t heal as quickly as mosquito bites. The Many Kinds Of Rats

Rats are rodents that belong to the Rattus genus of the family Muridae. These are the most dominant species on earth. Plenty of rat species exist in the planet. Most rodents eat plants, but some feed upon animals as well. In general, there are 2 basic rat types. They are black or roof rats and Norway or brown rats. Both are believed to have originated in Asia and are now widely spread throughout the planet.

Ship Rats

Roof rats (known as Rattus Rattus) are also called black rats and ship rats. These rats are normally black in color, slender, 16-21 cm long & weigh about 80-300 grams. Their tail is longer than the head and body and their nose and muzzle are pointed. As the name suggest, roof rats are climbers. Their paws are built to climb and build nestles in higher parts of dwellings, attics, rafters and crossbeams of buildings.

Norway Rat

The brown rat, which is also known as the Norway rat, house rat, gray rat, barn rat, and wharf rat, is the larger of the two mentioned here, and one of the best-known species. Their scientific name is Rattus norvegicus. They are mostly grayish-brown, with a lighter colored stomach. A fully-grown brown rat is 18 to 26 cm long & weighs between 400 and 600 grams. Their tail is shorter than its body and their nose and muzzle are blunt. They prefer moist conditions and nest in deep burrows.

These rats breed when they are three to four months of age. They breed up to 13 times a year & produce 1 to 22 in each litter. Black rats & brown rats eat about the same things. Their diet usually consists of meats, seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, fruits, cereals & invertebrates. They consume about one-third of their weight in food every 24 hours.

They carry fatal diseases, damage structures and contaminate food. Some of the diseases potentially deadly to man that spread through rats are Weil’s disease, plague, salmonella food poisoning & toxoplasmosis.

Various Species Of Cockroaches In The Home

There are 4000 odd species of cockroach in the world. Only three, though, are known to invade our workplaces and homes and cause problems. There are several other species that are similar, but can be found in the home a little less often. Each cockroach has its own particular features & all like somewhat varied things. Still they are all pests and can cause great health hazards and damage to us & our families.

Identifying these cockroaches could be the first step in eradication & control. It is pretty simple & can aid in extermination methods. Here are the 3 main types of cockroaches.

American Cockroach

The American cockroach has a reddish brown color and single stripe on the head. It can grow up to 25mm in length. These roaches love the taste of liquor and can often be found in drinking establishments or at home in case you had a party and didn’t clean up promptly. They can live for around one and half years, and have an incubation period of 6 to 8 weeks.

German Cockroach

The German cockroach has two lighter stripes on the back of its head, and boast of a tan or brownish color. They can grow up to lengths of 15mm. It is probably breeds the fastest among home pests, giving birth to around 30 to 40 nymphs with an incubation period of 30 days. At this rate, one cockroach can multiply into 30,000 within a year. They can live for around six months.

Oriental Cockroach

They are probably the biggest of these three. It grows approximately 25mm in length. These critters move more slowly than the other species & are a dark brown or black color with a shiny body. They are often called the water bug ’cause they like to live in dark, damp areas. They are potentially found in cellars or damp mulch. Incubation can last 2 months with about 15 eggs hatching & they can each live for up to 2 years.
