What do red bellied newts need in a tank with them?

Written by scottology on January 26, 2010 – 2:17 pm -

We have in the tank with them already a under water heater, filter, plants, pebbles and floating bark. Would any of the items in the tank cause the newts any problems?

    lets see,

first of all were talking Taricha rivularis right

since this species should not be kept over 24C and with 16-21C being a better temp range why do u have a heater? take it out asap its not worth having in there and could be harming the animals.

whether they need a semi aquatic or terrestrial set-up depends on what life stage they are in, newly metamorphed need a shallow water semi aquatic set-up while fully grown adults need a terrestrial damp woodland style set-up (except during breeding season) with a largish shallow water bowl.

young set-up, 50/50 water land, water depth 1-4 inches, water area can have aquatic plants large smooth pebbles and hiding places, land section needs hides and a substrate of paper towel, organic potting soil, coco humus (aka eco earth/bed a beast) or a smooth large rock like slate with hiding places. water area muct be filtered

adults, substrate of paper towel, organic potting soil, coco humus (aka eco earth/bed a beast), shallow easy to get in/out water dish, hides etc

No nothing in there should cause them any harm but make sure they have land to walk on but also a deep end where they can swim under the water.
Also have an area outside the tank where you can take them out and let them have some freedom for a little while. Even if it’s 1 min,

No, I also have fire bellied newts, and all of these items are also in my tank. But I may recommend that you make sure there is not a powerful flow on the filter, as this can push the newts into other tank items, harming their fragile skin. You can fix this by placing a large rock in from of the filter. You may also find that your newts are rather terrestrial (likes land more than water) when they are younger. This is alright because as they get older they adapt more to the water. You may wish to supply them with a bit more land than water. Also, make sure the water is not too high, e.g. anything under 2 inches is best. hope this helps :)
