Tortoise

Tortoise is the name given to the group of reptiles belonging to the family Testudinidae. Due to the similarities with their marine cousin (the sea turtle) they are also know as land turtles in many parts of the world. Tortoises shield their soft bodies from predators by using a tough/hard shell which makes this their most defining feature. Tortoise come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, with some of the smallest species being a few centimetres in length, ranging all the way up to the larger species which can reach sizes of 2 meters. Most tortoise are diurnal tending to be most active during the day, however they are generally reclusive and will hide away from scenes of commotion.

Generally, most tortoise have lifespans similar to that of humans, however some species have been known to live in excess of 100 years. As such it is important to remember that when purchasing a tortoise as an exotic pet it will more than likely be with you for the rest of your life. As such you need to be fully devoted for keeping and caring for your pet tortoise for a very long time.
